Got aches and pains? Try salt water...'It's like floating in space'

As we go through our day, without realizing it, we are constantly absorbing information.

Our brains need process every single thing we hear, see, smell, taste and feel.

But what if we didn't have to?

What if we could cut off all of our senses and give our brains a break?

At Stillwater Float Center in Boise that's exactly what you can do in a sensory deprivation chamber.

The sensory deprivation chambers are filled with 10 inches of water that's super saturated with 1,000 pounds of Epson salt so once you get in here you're going to float whether you want to or not.

The water in the chamber is heated to 93 degrees, about the same temperature as our skin.

"The whole idea behind that is that your brain doesn't know where your skin ends and the water begins," said Tyler Crow, owner of Stillwater Float Center.

There is a light in the chamber, but once the door closes and the light turns off: There's nothing.

"I mean it's hard to put in words how it feels. It's like floating in space," said Corey Turner, a frequent floater at Stillwater.

In the complete silent darkness your brain can relax.

"Once you hit that state of relaxation it doesn't take long to shut your brain off," Turner said. "I mean you can actually feel your pulse going through your body."

It isn't just relaxing -- many doctors and patients have seen chronic conditions improve as the patients float.

"They're doing studies on it finding that people were getting relief from their anxiety, from pain and were actually tampering off certain medications they were on," Crow said.

In fact many professional sports teams, including the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, use sensory deprivation therapy to help with aches and pains throughout the season.

Now people in the Treasure Valley can get the same treatment and they don't need to superstar athletes. They just need $65.
