A Sneak Peek at Maryam Waziri’s Acting Career

Maryam’s passion for acting gained momentum while she was still a student at UNIMAID. After completing her studies, she relocated to Kano state, where she met the movie producers who helped her find her path in Kannywood.

Though she joined the industry with so much enthusiasm, her shyness made her first experience in the industry quite challenging. Moreso, following her Islamic background, Maryam had to adapt to the restrictions placed on her career by her Islamic/Hausa tradition. The rules, according to her, include that she is not allowed to sit close to a man who is not her husband, and since she was not married in real life, she was not expected to depict it in movies.

Although these rules made things quite challenging for her and made some of her performances appear “unreal”, Maryam Waziri does not regret not touching a man or playing romantic roles because her Islamic faith is her priority. So far, Maryam has featured in flicks like Muguwar Mace, Yan Zamani, Labarina, Ya Ko Kishiya, Yakin Mata, and Aminan Juna. She also returned to Gombe state and committed herself to making more movies.

Maryam recalls films like “Muguwar Mace” and “Yan Zamani” as the two movies that brought her to the limelight. The 2016 movie “Muguwar Mace” had Waziri working with top Kannywood stars like Ahmad Ali Nuhu and Ali Gumak. While the 2019 drama series “Yan Zamani” further linked her with a wider number of Kannywood actors, including Umar Gombe.

In 2020, Maryam Waziri gained further public notice for her appearance in the movie titled “Labarina.”  The movie was produced by Saira Movies, and it features the likes of Naziru Sarkin Waka, Daddy Hikima, Hadiza Muhammad, and others.

Thanks to her versatility and ability to portray different movie roles, Maryam has appeared in over 30 Kannywood Movies, and these films have won her different awards and recognition in Nigeria.
