The fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers are having a deep sigh of relief as the Steelers’ management yesterday announced the firing of their offensive coordinator Matt Canada. The Steelers’ offense was abysmal this season and struggled to create proper attacking intent in their ten games this season. Following their sluggish attacking performances, multiple ‘Fire Canada’ calls were raised by the fans and the owner finally responded to it.
Amid the ‘fan celebrations’, an old video resurfaced on social media that depicted Matt Canada had problems not only from the fans but also amongst the Steelers’ players. As per a video posted by the ESPN analyst AI Smizzle, the Steelers’ placekicker Chris Boswell openly expressed his agony against the OC during last season, after a week six win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The video showed how the kicker denied any contribution from Canada’s end in the Steelers’ win. When the then-OC was celebrating the victory, Boswell said,
It ain't cause of you. I can guarantee you that much.
The resurfaced video of Boswell trolling Canada started harboring a lot of reactions on social media. It received support from the fans who bashed Canada regularly. However, the video pointed fingers at something else.
Despite multiple calls from the fans and the lack of attacking intent from the team, the players criticized Canada’s strategies in public. It was only Najee Harris, the running back for the Steelers, who criticized how the team played after the loss against the Cleveland Browns.
You could look at the record and say, 'OK, we're still good right now.' Or we could look at the record and be like, 'If we keep playing this type of football, how long is that s--- going to last?' I look at it like, 'How long that s--- going to last?' Y'all could look at it like it's a good record, but I mean it's the NFL. Winning how we did, it's not going to get us nowhere.
Matt Canada failed to ensure success with the Pittsburgh Steelers
Canada had three seasons with the Steelers as OC. He started as a quarterbacks coach in 2020 and later got promoted to offensive coordinator in 2021. However, the OC failed to garner much success as the team struggled in the past two years.
This year is no exception since the Steelers are among the weakest attacking sides to play in the league. They are presently standing with a 6-4 record, all thanks to their defense that carried the team throughout.
Despite failing on multiple occasions, the Steelers’ management had faith in Canada as they earlier cleared their stand to keep him on the team. However, things came to an end after the game against the Browns, and head coach Mike Tomlin released a statement regarding the sacking of Canada. Tomlin said,
Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator--I appreciate Matt's hard work and dedication, and I wish him the best moving forward in his career.
The quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan will take charge as the offensive co-ordinator. It is to be seen whether the decision does any good to the future of this Steelers team.
